Goodbye

She rocked herself slowly into the night, struggling to swallow her sadness.

“I can’t do this anymore,” fell from her mouth onto the floor.

The wind filtered through her window as goosebumps made homes on her body.

She gripped her arms a little tighter and sealed her eyelids shut.

This was her period of undoing.

She unraveled the hold he had on her mind.

She loosened his grip around her heart.

She began to let go of the memories that made room for no future.

She disconnected herself from his smile, his eyes, his touch.

This was her period of undoing.

All of the nuances that strengthened their bond,

could not compensate for what weakened it.

All of the things she daydreamed about,

could not alter their reality.

All of the elements that drew her towards him,

could not keep her from walking away.

This was her period of undoing.

This was her goodbye.
